Laser Hair Reduction

What is Laser Hair Reduction?

Laser hair reduction utilizes laser technology to target and eliminate individual hair follicles. This technology is referred to as selective photolysis. Selective photolysis targets melanin within the hair follicle, resulting in elevated temperatures and destruction of the hair follicle. Only hair follicles that are within the growth phase of the hair growth cycle (anagen phase) are affected. For this reason, multiple treatments are required for full effect (90-95% hair reduction).

Dr. Rovelo uses the Alma Soprano ICE laser technology for hair removal. The Soprano ICE laser is an 810nm diode laser with a sapphire contact-cooling handpiece that allows for selective heating of the hair follicle while protecting the surrounding skin. This system results in a treatement with increased efficacy, improved patient comfort, and decreased complications to the surrounding skin. The Soprano ICE laser is compatible with all skin types.

Who is a candidate for Laser Hair Reduction?

You may want to consider laser hair reduction if you have concerns about:

  • Hair that requires frequent methods of removal on the face, torso, arms, or legs
  • Unwanted hair growth that generates feelings of embarrassment or self-consciousness

How is Laser Hair Reduction Performed?

A laser hair reduction is performed in the office. Sensitive areas including the nipples and bikini lines may require topical anesthesia. A lubricating gel will be applied to the skin and then the cool handpiece will be glided across the skin. Areas being treated may feel warm and occasionally there are snapping or pinching sensations. Depending on the size and areas treated, the procedure may take15-60 minutes to perform.

The risks of laser hair removal are very low. Risks of scarring and pigment changes are increased in patients with recent sun exposure, therefore it is recommended to be out of the sun for 3-4 weeks prior to your treatment.

Laser hair reduction is performed in the office and patients can go home immediately following the procedure. Following the procedure, it is important to avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks. Treated hair follicles will shed their hair over the following 2-3 weeks. Following this shedding, you may notice decreased hair growth until the new phase of untreated hair follicles begin to grow. Over the course of 5-6 treatments, the majority of hair follicles will be treated and a dramatic decrease in hair growth (90-95%) will be noticed.
