What is Earlobe Surgery?

Earlobe surgery is performed to reduce excessively large earlobes or to repair earlobes that have been torn or stretched due to trauma or earring use.

The goal of earlobe surgery is to create an earlobe that is appropriate in size and shape to the remainder of the ear.

Who is a Candidate For Earlobe Surgery?

You may want to consider an earlobe surgery if you have:

  • Excessively large earlobes, either congenital or due to aging
  • Split earlobes secondary to trauma
  • Stretched out earlobes due to heavy or gauge earrings

How is Earlobe Surgery Performed?

Earlobe surgery can be performed under local anesthesia.

If the goal of the surgery is to reduce the size of the earlobes, this can be done by excising a wedge of excess earlobe tissue or by excising the lower periphery of the earlobe.

Earlobe traumas and tears can be repaired by either excising the defect and closing primarily, or by converting the defect to a wedge excision and then closing primarily.

Incisions are closed with sutures and covered with a dressing.

Earlobe Surgery Risks

All surgery is associated with risks. Risks associated with earlobe surgery include bleeding, infection, asymmetry, and need for revisional surgery.

It is important to talk with Dr. Rovelo about the risks of your surgery and how the risks can be minimized to provide the best possible outcome.

Earlobe Surgery Recovery

Earlobe surgery is performed in the office under local anesthesia and the patient can go home the same day.

The dressing may be removed after 2 days and an antibiotic ointment should be applied until the sutures are removed, usually after 1 week.

The ear can be re-pierced 6 weeks after surgery.
